Information Regarding the Recent Influenza Outbreak.

The first confirmed case of Novel Influenza A(H1N1) in Japan was reported on the 16th of May, 2009. While it is said that this type of influenza is highly contagious, most people will recover with only minor symptoms.

However, pregnant women or people with existing medical conditions (such as diabetes or asthma etc.) are advised to take extra precautions.

With infection expected to increase in the near future it is important to remain calm and make decisions based on the latest information available.

How to Prevent Novel Influenza A(H1N1)

Essentially you can take the same measures to prevent Novel Influenza A(H1N1) as you would any other type of influenza:
"Wash your hands and gargle as soon as you arrive home.
"If you have symptoms such as coughing or sneezing, please make sure you wear a mask.
"Make sure you eat properly and get enough rest.
"Use a humidifier to prevent your room from drying out.

Preparing your Household for an Outbreak of Novel Influenza A(H1N1)

In order to prepare for a mass outbreak of Novel Influenza A(H1N1) in Japan it is recommended that you enough have food and daily necessities (approximately 2 weeks worth) in your residence to be able to survive without going outside.

  1. You have a temperature higher than 38℃ or acute respiratory symptoms.
  2. You have been in contact with anyone who is infected with Novel Influenza A(H1N1).
  3. You have been to country or an area that has experienced a recent outbreak of Novel Influenza A(H1N1).

*There is the possibility that if you don’t contact the healthcare center and then visit a clinic or hospital with the virus you will infect other patients and/ or staff members. In order to prevent this from occurring please wear a mask when visiting clinics or hospitals.
